Hands On Asheville-Buncombe

Many years ago I was in a difficult financial position and was able to get a much needed service through the United Way. Soon after that I got a job that allowed me to "pay back" for the help I received and continued to do so throughout my 23 year career. When I left my last job, I had just made a monetary pledge to the United Way but could no longer honor it. I found Hands On Asheville-Buncombe about 2 weeks later through a brochure in a doctor's office. I was overjoyed to find I could still contribute to our local community directly. I have now contributed more than 1500 knitted/crocheted items through the Knit-N-Give flex project directly to organizations who distribute them to others who need them.

Mission & Vision

Hands On Asheville-Buncombe, the volunteer center of United Way of Asheville and Buncombe County, provides a link for individuals, families, corporate, and civic or faith-based groups to volunteer in support of nonprofits in Asheville and Buncombe County.

During 2012, Hands On Asheville-Buncombe helped connect nearly 3,000 individuals to more than 726 volunteer opportunities with 160 Asheville/Buncombe County nonprofits. These volunteers contributed over 16,000 hours over the course of 2012. Although the value of their time and talents cannot be truly quantified, the estimated savings to local nonprofits was over $350,000!
