Who We Are
Mission: To advance educational equity by building long-term partnerships with students, families, communities, and schools to create experiences outside of school that inspire the joy of learning.
Horizons at Carolina Day is a long-term, award-winning enrichment program that works to counter the summer slide in education, the achievement gap, and the opportunity gap for underserved children in Asheville. Children join Horizons the summer after kindergarten and return to the program each year through 8th grade, building lasting relationships with their teachers and peers, and developing life skills essential for success.
What We Do
Our programming is two-pronged:
Summer Enrichment: Our summer program from grade K to 9 is a joyful six weeks of structured, summer learning activities that promote healthy youth development on the campus of Carolina Day School. In small classes led by professional teachers, students dive into a rich curriculum with a focus on reading, STEM, and art. Swimming and other confidence-boosting activities break down barriers to success and expose children to new opportunities.
School-Year Outreach: While our “Six Weeks Of Happiness” over the summer are the heart of the Horizons approach, our commitment to our students and families continues year-round. Some of our school year outreach includes:
- School-Year Tutoring Program
- Holiday Parties
- Family Check-ins
- Food, Clothing & Book Drives
- Agency Referrals
- School Visits
- Meetings with Teachers and Administrators
