Who We Are

Mission: To establish permanently affordable residential, commercial, and community spaces that empower Black, Indigenous, People of Color, and low- to moderate-income residents to build social, economic, and cultural capital.

The Asheville-Buncombe Community Land Trust (ABCLT) is a nonprofit organization founded to address affordable housing challenges in the Asheville and Buncombe County region. By focusing on community empowerment, the organization works to counteract displacement caused by rising property values and gentrification.

ABCLT is the only local non-profit organization that provides permanently affordable homes for low- and moderate-income households in Buncombe County. Sparked by years of community organizing and fueled by a report commissioned by the City of Asheville, ABCLT was formed to create attainable homeownership by cooperatively owning land and selling homes below market rate. Our model builds generational wealth, decreases displacement, and slows gentrification.

What We Do

ABCLT uses a community land trust model, where land is held in trust and homes are sold or rented at affordable rates, ensuring that housing remains affordable in perpetuity. This model allows families to build equity while keeping the property accessible to future generations. The organization is particularly committed to supporting BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color) communities and preserving historically significant neighborhoods.
