Who We Are
Mission: To prevent and end homelessness in our community through permanent housing and support.
Homeward Bound of WNC is a Buncombe County nonprofit agency working with others to end the cycle of homelessness. Homeward Bound embraces the belief that everyone has a human right to live inside. We utilize a housing first approach and other best practices to help pull individuals out of crisis and help them reach their goals.
What We Do
Homeward Bound of WNC uses the Housing First model, an assistance approach that involves outreach and library in-reach, preventing homelessness when possible, and moving people experiencing homelessness into permanent housing as quickly as possible while providing wrap around supports and resources to help maintain housing stability and individual well-being. Homeward Bound provides assistance through the following programs:
- AHOPE Day Center provides showers, mail receipt, phone service, storage of personal belongings, and information about other community resources.
- The Welcome Home Donation Center collects and distributes gently used furniture and household items to assist those establishing a new home.
- Compass Point Village is an 85 unit residential facility providing deeply affordable housing to individuals coming from street homelessness. Supportive services exist on site including case management, medical services, meals, and more.
- Housing Programs (Civilian and Veteran) provide both short-term and long-term rental assistance and case management services to individuals experiencing chronic homelessness.
- Outreach engages with individuals who are most vulnerable and living on the streets to connect them with permanent supportive housing, healthcare, disability income, and community mental health services.
- Homelessness Prevention provides individuals and families rental and utility assistance and case management services to help them avoid homelessness and stay in their rental units when they have no other housing options.
