Who We Are
Mission: To cultivate a learning community where student leaders thrive and feel successful through rigorous academics supported by social and emotional learning, social justice, and the arts.
Claxton Elementary School of Arts and Humanities is a magnet school of the Asheville City Schools system serving students in kindergarten through fifth grades through a curriculum that incorporates art, music, drama and physical education. The school envisions an environment that celebrates diverse learners through the use of a variety of teaching methods that integrate the arts so that each student will develop skills, knowledge, and character.
What We Do
Claxton Elementary provides a curriculum for each grade level that follows the North Carolina Standard Course of Study through the integration of the arts, humanities, the Fundations literacy program, and Investigations Math program. Students also have the opportunity to develop leadership skills and creativity through activities such as:
- Student Lighthouse Team
- Coding Club
- Elementary Battle of the Books
- Girls on the Run
- Claxton Flyers Boys Running Team
- After School Arts Program
- School Musical
Claxton Elementary implements the Leader in Me program, which teaches 21st century leadership and life skills to students and creates a culture of student empowerment. The Claxton Social Justice League works to make a more equitable learning community by exploring racial equity and structural racism in the school environment.
