Mission: To conduct a companion ministry for all, especially adults living with mental illness, addiction, and homelessness.
Haywood Street Ministries in Asheville, NC, is a nonprofit organization that focuses on providing services and building community, particularly for individuals experiencing homelessness or poverty. The ministry offers various programs, including a weekly “Welcome Table,” which serves a free community meal, a respite care program for those needing short-term, post-hospitalization care, and opportunities for spiritual connection through worship services. Their approach is rooted in radical hospitality, aiming to break down barriers and create a space of dignity and respect for all people, regardless of their circumstances.
What We Do
Haywood Street pursues its mission in the context of programs that help address basic needs of individuals experiencing homelessness or living in poverty:
- Downtown Welcome Table: A free community lunch served family style to community members twice weekly.
- Haywood Street Respite: A safe place for adults experiencing homelessness to stay on a short term basis and receive help after being discharged from a hospital.
- Worship Service: Twice weekly services welcoming all.
- Haywood Street Community Garden: Flowers, fruits, and vegetables grown using organic and sustainable methods.
- Haywood Street Fresco: A community-inspired fresco portraying the Beatitudes, affirming sacred worth, restoring human dignity, and sabotaging the shame of poverty.
