Owen Middle School receives clothing to distribute to students in need in our Community Resource Room. We are seeking volunteers to help organize the clothing donations on 10/2, 10/9, 10/16, 10/23, 10/30, and 11/6.

The Black Mountain Center for the Arts offers high-quality, accessible arts education and programming to the Swannanoa Valley community. Our MoveAbility program engages and empowers individuals with disabilities through adaptive dance, movement improvisation, and self-expression in a supportive environment.

Opportunity Overview
We are seeking MoveAbility Classroom Assistants to help our lead instructor create a safe, engaging, and inclusive dance experience for participants with physical and/or intellectual disabilities. Volunteers may also assist with special off-site performances such as the Black Mountain Christmas Parade and our annual Spring Dance Recital.

We are looking for someone who would like to volunteer on a regular basis to run our Resource Center. This person would support in organizing donations, maintaining the room/clothes/items, keeping track of needs, and communicating with the Erwin Community School Coordinator. This could be any type of commitment and we are willing to work with your schedule.

At Read 2 Succeed Asheville/Buncombe (R2S), we believe all children are capable, brilliant, and worthy of an education that affirms their full potential. We partner with families, schools, and volunteers to support K–5 students across Asheville and Buncombe County in becoming confident, joyful readers.

Public schools—especially those serving Black and Brown students—are under-resourced and impacted by systems that weren’t built for equity. Meher Archive Collective is dedicated to establishing and maintaining an archive to preserve knowledge and materials associated with Meher Baba’s life and work, and to providing a location for service opportunities for the local community. We are renovating the historic Red Oak School building in Weaverville and are close to having our archive move into a section of that building. With one of our main priorities being archiving, our archiving team is searching for volunteers to aid in our efforts. Archiving involves accessing received items and collections, taking inventory of the items, and caring for the items in a way that aims to preserve and protect them. This is tedious but fulfilling and honorable work, getting to come in contact with Baba-related artifacts and caring for them in a way that allows for them to be shared with the world for generations. This work is flexible, allowing for varying hours throughout the week depending on your schedule.

Literacy Together (formerly the Literacy Council of Buncombe County) is a nonprofit organization working with children, youth, and adults to increase comprehensive literacy and English language skills through access to literacy resources and specialized instruction by trained volunteer tutors. Literacy Together relies on volunteer tutors to offer students personal instruction and high-quality materials through various programs.

The Youth Literacy Program is seeking tutors to meet with students K-5 twice a week for 50 minutes, between 3:30 pm and 5:30 pm. The Youth Literacy Program works with two after-school programs that primarily serve youth of color.  The two locations are in Asheville.

Youth Literacy tutors work with children from low-income families who read, write, and/or spell below their grade level. Tutors in this program complete an initial orientation and a 16-20 hours training, which includes some pre-course work and/or homework (short articles to read, short videos to watch). They then receive follow-up support and the option to attend in-service training throughout their tutoring commitment. Youth Literacy tutors commit to working with their students for at least one school year.

The English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) program teaches oral English, reading, and writing to adults who have immigrated to the U.S. from around the world. ESOL is the largest program at Literacy Together, serving approximately 250 students annually. Our students’ most common goals in learning English are to improve their employment prospects, help their children in school, and pass the U.S. Naturalization exam. Each student works with a trained volunteer tutor, either individually or in a small group of up to ten people.

Our Adult Literacy Program needs GED volunteer tutors asap!

They come to us because they want to improve their job prospects, help their children in school, enroll in a GED program, or just feel better about themselves and their ability to cope in today’s world.
