Volunteer: Archiving Audio Transcription Team Help

Meher Archive Collective is seeking volunteers to join our Transcription Team! Audio transcription involves two roles: Transcriber and Proofreader. Transcribing involves typing out what is being said, as accurately as possible, in the 5-10 minute long MP3 files made from tapes in our collection. Proofreading involves listening to the MP3 files and reviewing the typed transcriptions, identifying and correcting any errors in grammar, spelling, punctuation, formatting, and content. These are detail-oriented positions involving tedious work that requires focus, patience, and a commitment to producing high-quality, error-free transcripts. Volunteers may need to listen to audio several times over to ensure they are getting all the details as accurately as possible. Some tapes have damage or poor audio quality, and thus it's more difficult to get a full transcription. Volunteers are asked to make their best guess, but to mark anywhere they cannot understand what's been said so that others may try to fill in. Our audio files can be talks, singing, prayer, poetry and more.

Volunteer Responsibilities include:
Attending transcription meetings
Working independently on accepted assignments
Working with teams on special projects

Requirements:
Submit a volunteer application
Review MAC’s Culture and Code of Ethics document.Accept and follow MAC’s IT Policies and Procedures.

Work is flexible and can be from 1-10 hours a week depending on your schedule and desired workloadMust have a laptop/computer

Volunteer: Guardian ad Litem- Volunteer Court Advocate

Established by statute in 1983, the North Carolina Guardian ad Litem Program has been serving abused and neglected children for more than 30 years. When a petition alleging abuse or neglect of a juvenile is filed in district court, the judge appoints a volunteer Guardian ad Litem advocate and an attorney advocate to provide team representation to the child—and this team has full party status in trial and appellate proceedings. All Guardian ad Litem advocates are trained, supervised, and supported by program staff in each county of the state. The collaborative model of GAL attorney advocates, volunteers, and staff ensures that all North Carolina children who are alleged by the Division of Social Services to have been abused or neglected receive GAL legal advocacy services.

Though each case is unique, GALs donate approximately eight hours each month to perform their statutorily mandated duties. They visit child-clients, conduct interviews, read reports, monitor court orders, collaborate with service providers, formulate fact-based child-focused court reports with recommendations, and may testify in court hearings.

Volunteer Responsibilities:

Volunteer: National Emergency Child Care Network - Emergency Childcare Volunteers

National Emergency Child Care Network provides immediate child care services to families in western North Carolina who are experiencing hardship.

You will be deployed to help families with emergency child care. Many families contact us when they are in desperate need of relief and respite.  Once a family fills out a web form for help, an alert goes out to all volunteers within the local 60-mile radius. Most deployments are 5-10 miles from where you live. We have helped 44 families and 73 children in Asheville with emergency child care -- all families impacted by Tropical Storm Helene. Most deployments will be at the home of the family in need -- and ALL volunteers have absolutely loved the families.

When a family calls, we deploy volunteers. When a partner calls, we deploy volunteers. We are a local NC organization helping families in North Carolina.

Shifts can be up to 4-8 hours per day. Multiple days. It's up to you!

Requirements:

All volunteers are required to attend a 2-hour training on Psychological First Aid, either virtual or in-person.

Must be 18 years or older. We will ask you to sign two documents:

Background check approval

Volunteer Agreement

Attire: Professional attire with National Emergency Child Care Network t-shirts and name badges.

Location:

We do not know yet where the location will be. We want to meet you and welcome you to the team! We have 300 volunteers already registered, of whom, 70 have gone through the full training. :-) We deploy 3-5 volunteers every week to help 1-2 families with child care. And, those families are GRATEFUL!
