Volunteer: WAVL Community Cleanup


As an individual and family shelter in West Asheville, Safe Shelter partners with community organizations to provide wraparound support for our guests in securing permanent housing and any other things they made need. Building relationships is at the heart of what we do and taking care of our shared living spaces is an important aspect of sustaining those relationships. One of the weekly projects we lead is a Community Clean-Up of our neighborhood.


Community Clean-ups occur every Tuesday from 1-2pm around West Asheville. Free parking and supplies are provided and individuals or groups are welcome.



Volunteer Responsibilities:

Picking up trash/litter


Requirements:

Skills Required: 

Comfortable working outside in all weather conditions

Comfortable handling trash 


Attire:

Safe Shelter has recently launched ATHENA - the Affordable Tiny Home Network of Asheville, a program that creates new opportunities for affordable and safe housing by combing education, workforce development, and community-based construction to produce affordable tiny homes for those who have experienced homelessness or other housing barriers. The program lowers construction costs through donated materials and volunteer labor while maintaining professional oversight and safety standards.
For each Community Build on Tuesdays and Sundays, volunteers can stop by for any length of time to learn and/or share skills related to construction and landscaping. Main projects involve building tiny homes, gardening, removing invasive plants, and spreading mulch.


Two available days (come for any length of time):

Tuesdays: 10:00am-7:00pm

Sundays: 1:00-6:00pm


Volunteer Responsibilities (Depending on Project):

Assistance with construction and landscaping projects

spreading mulch, planting flowers/trees, weeding/mowing, invasive removal, etc.

building/installing shelves, picnic tables, tiny homes, etc.

painting/decorating


Requirements:

Come share a meal with us!


Safe Shelter is an individual and family shelter dedicated to providing community and support for people in need of permanent housing. Every Wednesday night from 6:30 to 7:30pm, Safe Shelter has a family-style community dinner.


This is great opportunity to meet and be in community with our shelter residents. After dinner, we often play Scopa (a Sicilian card game) or go outside for soccer! Feel free to bring a dessert or a non-alcoholic drink to share!


Volunteer Responsibilities:

Participating in the meal, table conversations, and any icebreakers/relationship building activities (as you're able)


Requirements:

An open mind 

Please keep in mind that you will be in our shelter residents' home. Please be respectful, connective, and honor guests' privacy. 


Skills Required: 

None.


Attire:

Whatever you're comfortable in! Meals are casual and usually indoors.
