Volunteer: YouthBuild: Teach English and Math Skills to Youth Seeking Construction Certification


Literacy Together (formerly The Literacy Council of Buncombe County) Volunteer Tutors provide free, customized, one-on-one or small group tutoring to adults in Buncombe County. For the YouthBuild program, you will teach middle-school and high-school level English and Math to young adults (ages 16-24) who are enrolled in a full-time (30 hours/week), six-month workforce development and leadership program leading to a high school credential (GED) while also building job readiness, leadership skills, and confidence. Students receive hands-on construction training and earn a nationally recognized NCCER Core Construction credential while helping build affordable housing at community sites in Fairview and Asheville. YouthBuild CORE-2 is a project jointly operated by Hood Huggers Foundation, Land of Sky Regional Council and Camp Grier's WORX Project, with educational/vocational support and leadership from AB-Tech Community College and Literacy Together.



Volunteer Responsibilities:

Teach reading OR math skills to YouthBuild participants. Tutor chooses which subject.


Requirements:

Attend a volunteer orientationComplete 8-12 hours of training, depending on the subject and focus for your instruction.Show up reliability for tutoring. We ask for two hours per week.


Skills Required: 

Compassion and curiosity

No teaching experience required; we'll train you

Literacy Together (formerly The Literacy Council of Buncombe County) Volunteer Tutors provide free, customized, one-on-one tutoring for elementary or middle-school students in Asheville City or Buncombe County schools who are working to improve English speaking, reading, writing, and spelling skills. Tutors work with students for about 45 minutes, two days a week, in an afterschool or classroom setting during school days. We are now seeking students for English as a Second Language programs as well as basic reading instruction.


Volunteer Responsibilities:

Literacy Together (formerly The Literacy Council of Buncombe County) Volunteer Tutors provide free, customized, one-on-one tutoring for adults with very basic literacy skills or those seeking to get a GED (high school) degree in Buncombe County. Adult literacy students often have learning disabilities or differences such as dyslexia. Tutors are trained to help students navigate these learning challenges and all materials are provided. The program director works to connect students and tutors to the resources they need.
