Community Nights featuring Homework Diners are a welcoming family engagement event at the school that take place on the North Buncombe Middle School campus and includes a free, catered meal for families and students, time for relationship building between school staff and families, academic tutoring support and connections to community resources. 

Community Nights are open to any family in the North Buncombe community, whether they have a child attending the school or not.

The North Buncombe Middle Community Nights occur on twice a month on Tuesdays from 5:00-6:30 pm. Each day will have 3 slots available for a 2-hour shift. Volunteers are asked to arrive at 4:45 pm and leave at 6:45 pm to assist with setting up and breaking down the event.

We are seeking energetic volunteers to prepare and serve meals for our residents for lunch and dinner. This opportunity provides you with the chance to prepare meals in our commercial kitchen alongside our trained staff while serving the women and children of Transformation Village.

Equal Plates Project is a local nonprofit that purchases from small farms at fair prices, transforms their quality ingredients into nourishing meals, and partners with community organizations to share thousands of meals each week with neighbors facing complex barriers to food access. 

Volunteer Responsibilities:

There is no parking at First Presbyterian church. However, you are welcome to park behind Central United Methodist Church on Buncombe Street. *NOTE: we now have parking passes that need to be put on your car dashboard. Please come to the Central UMC first, grab a pass and return it after your shift.

Park at the top of Buncombe St. by the fire escape. 

Ring the bell at the black gate by the Equal Plates Project sign.

There are also a couple of free parking garages nearby that you can park in or you can use the paid street parking. 

Once parked, walk on Church Street towards Patton Avenue and turn down the alley that runs next to the church.  

When you get to the blue dumpsters, turn right and ring the doorbell by the Equal Plates sign.

Haywood Street Congregation has set out to be a community that favors the city’s outskirts, lavishes the dinner table with folded napkins and flower bouquets, and prioritizes an individual’s inherent worth over their status.

We are looking for people to help with meal prep on Tuesdays from 10am - 2 pm for our Wednesday downtown welcome table meal.  

Must be 18+

Skills Required:  

Positive and compassionate customer service skills Willingness to work with and be in community with folks struggling with mental illness, substance use, homelessness  Ability to remain standing for long periods Ability to lift up to 10 lbs. 

Attire:

No requirements. Comfortable clothes and shoes recommended. No storage for miscellaneous items i.e. purses, etc.

The Downtown Welcome Table is a restaurant style meal where everyone is welcome to the table to experience a dignifying, abundant meal served on East Fork Pottery with freshly rolled linens and silverware. 

When you come to serve at Haywood Street you are invited to be a Companion rather than a volunteer. You are invited to "be with" before you "do for." As a companion you can serve as a table server, you can work in our kitchen preparing plates, help clean the dishes in the dish-room or simply sit down and enjoy a meal with a neighbor.

Lunch on Wednesdays is served from 10am-12:30pm. Companions are needed from 8am-2:30pm.
