Description

The American Red Cross is seeking dedicated Disaster Health Services (DHS) volunteers to support Regional Disaster Cycle Services by providing health-related assistance and compassionate care to shelter residents before, during, and after disasters such as hurricanes, wildfires, and other emergencies. This role helps ensure clients receive the support and resources they need to maintain their health and well-being during times of crisis.

Volunteer Responsibilities

  • Provide basic health and personal care support to shelter residents.
  • Conduct health assessments and identify individuals who may require higher levels of care.
  • Assist clients with replacing medications, medical equipment, and health-related supplies.
  • Advocate for client health needs and communicate concerns to Disaster Health Services leadership.
  • Support the health and well-being of children, families, older adults, and individuals with access and functional needs.
  • Collaborate with shelter staff and community partners to ensure appropriate client care and support.

Requirements

  • Be available to volunteer approximately 10 to 20 hours per month.
  • Demonstrate reliability, professionalism, and a commitment to serving others.
  • Attend required training sessions and team meetings.
  • Follow American Red Cross program standards, policies, and guidance.

Skills Needed

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with staff and volunteer leadership.
  • Strong organizational and problem-solving abilities.
  • Comfortable interacting with individuals from diverse backgrounds and experiences.
  • Compassion, empathy, and a client-centered approach to service.
  • Ability to remain calm and professional in challenging or stressful situations.
