Description

Before you even begin thinking about volunteering, ask yourself – Am I well enough to volunteer?

Your safety and limiting the spread of COVID-19 is everyone’s main priority. We encourage you to review and adhere to the recommendations on the Buncombe County readiness site on how best to avoid COVID-19 and what to do if you think you might have it.

Knit-n-Give at Home is a project designed to provide hand-knit newborn or adult hats. Completed baby hats will be given to expectant or new mothers in celebration of their completion of the Centering Pregnancy program for prenatal care, offered at WNCCHS and MAHEC. These new moms meet together, learn care skills, participate in facilitated discussion, and develop a support network with other members. Centering Pregnancy is a model of prenatal care that includes a traditional health checkup with additional time and attention in a group setting.

Baby hats are also given to mothers participating in MAHEC's Project CARA.  Project CARA works to decrease barriers and the stigma that prevent pregnant women with substance use disorders from getting the quality obstetrical care and substance use treatment that they deserve.

Adult hats will be distributed by Homeward Bound of Asheville to individuals served at the A HOPE Day Center. Your handmade knitwear will keep our neighbors warm during our long winters. This is a great project to do with friends, co-workers, family members, or on your own.

Since this project is done from home, volunteers should have prior experience with knitting or crocheting and will need to provide their own yarn and needles. Please click on the "Respond" button and we will email you instructions so you can help from home.
