Volunteer: National Emergency Child Care Network - Emergency Childcare Volunteers

National Emergency Child Care Network provides free child care services to families in western North Carolina who are experiencing hardship. Many of these families have experienced Hurricane Helene and still need care in the long-term recovery of the disaster. We are headquartered in Durham, North Carolina.

You will be deployed to help families with child care. Many families contact us when they are in desperate need of relief and respite.  Once a family fills out a web form for help, an alert goes out to all volunteers within the local 60-mile radius. Most deployments are 5-10 miles from where you live. We have helped 60+ families and 100 children with emergency child care from North Carolina to Los Angeles, CA. Most deployments will be at the home of the family in need, or at a playground, or park.  Volunteers find these deployments to be very rewarding and meaningful.

Shifts can be up to 4-8 hours per day. Multiple days. It's entirely up to you!

Requirements:

All volunteers are required to attend a 90-min virtual training on Psychological First Aid

You will be asked to provide proof of driver's license and auto insurance.

Must be 18 years or older. We will ask you to sign two documents:

Background check approval

Volunteer Agreement

Attire: Professional attire includes a logo t-shirt and name badges. We buy t-shirts and ship them to you. We also pay for your background check.

Location:

We do not know where the location will be.  We have 500 volunteers already registered, of whom, 200 have gone through the full training. We deploy 4-8 volunteers monthly to help 1-3 families with child care.

We partner with families, schools, and volunteers to support K–5 students across Asheville and Buncombe County in becoming confident, joyful readers.

We’re recruiting volunteer reading tutors to commit to one student for the full school year, meeting with them twice a week during or after school. Our tutors are trained, supported, and deeply connected to a network of people committed to literacy justice and educational equity in our community.

Volunteer: Guardian ad Litem- Volunteer Court Advocate

Established by statute in 1983, the North Carolina Guardian ad Litem Program has been serving abused and neglected children for more than 30 years. When a petition alleging abuse or neglect of a juvenile is filed in district court, the judge appoints a volunteer Guardian ad Litem advocate and an attorney advocate to provide team representation to the child—and this team has full party status in trial and appellate proceedings. All Guardian ad Litem advocates are trained, supervised, and supported by program staff in each county of the state. The collaborative model of GAL attorney advocates, volunteers, and staff ensures that all North Carolina children who are alleged by the Division of Social Services to have been abused or neglected receive GAL legal advocacy services.

Though each case is unique, GALs donate approximately eight hours each month to perform their statutorily mandated duties. They visit child-clients, conduct interviews, read reports, monitor court orders, collaborate with service providers, formulate fact-based child-focused court reports with recommendations, and may testify in court hearings.

Volunteer Responsibilities:

Digging for details in the case Collaborating with other participants in the case Recommending what’s best for a child by writing court reports Empowering the child’s voice Staying vigilant by constantly monitoring the case Keeping all information confidential
