What You'll Do:

Arrive 15 minutes early for check-in

Gallery Assistants provide essential behind-the-scenes support during the installation and breakdown of the Art in Bloom floral display. This is a hands-on, physical role that involves moving supplies, supporting floral designers, and helping reset the gallery space.

Volunteer Responsibilities:

Set-Up (Thursday, June 18 | Arrive 8:55 AM):

Help floral designers unload materials and locate their assigned gallery piece

Set up and position pedestals throughout the gallery

Transport supplies and equipment to and from storage

Maintain cleanliness and clear pathways in shared spaces

Remind artists to submit their final artist statements

Assist with photo and video capture for BMCA staff

Break-Down (Sunday, June 21 | Arrive 3:45 PM):

Help floral designers safely pack up their arrangements

Reset the gallery and dance studio for regular programming

Assist with relocating pedestals and artwork

Distribute thank-you notes to floral designers

Requirements:

Completion of volunteer waiver and emergency contact form before your shift

Skills Required:

Ability to lift and carry up to 30 lbs.

Ability to walk up and down three flights of stairs repeatedly throughout your shift — please note that BMCA's elevator was damaged during Hurricane Helene and the Town of Black Mountain, which owns the building, is still working on the budget for its replacement

Ability to stay on your feet and remain active for several hours

Comfortable taking direction from staff and floral designers

Careful and attentive handling of artwork and floral arrangements

Attire:

Comfortable, movable clothing you don't mind getting dusty or damp

Closed-toed, supportive shoes — no sandals or slip-ons

Black Mountain Center for the Arts seeks reliable, organized, and patient volunteers to support dancers and ensure smooth backstage operations during our annual dance recital. This combined role involves assisting with backstage coordination, dressing room supervision, and dancer lineup/staging to help create a professional, safe, and positive experience for all performers.


Volunteer Responsibilities:

Manage the flow of dancers entering and exiting the stage wings, ensuring performers are in the correct order

Supervise assigned dressing rooms by age group, and maintain organization

Gather dancers from dressing rooms and line them up for their performances, providing calm, encouraging support, especially to younger or nervous dancers

Conduct final costume and appearance checks before performers go onstage

Escort dancers to and from stage wings as needed

Communicate closely with the stage manager and other backstage staff via walkie-talkie

Handle last-minute issues, quick prop placements, and any emergencies calmly and efficiently

Skills & Attributes:


Comfortable working in warm or confined spaces


Calm, patient, and nurturing demeanor, especially when working with children

Strong organizational skills and attention to detail

Ability to multitask and manage multiple dancers simultaneously

Clear communication and teamwork skills

Ability to stand and move for 3-4 hours in dimly lit, potentially crowded backstage areas



Attire:

All black clothing preferred (black shirt and pants) for backstage areas

Comfortable, quiet, close-toed shoes

Minimal jewelry that won’t interfere with costumes or make noise

Clothing appropriate for physical movement and working with children

About the Role:
Black Mountain Center for the Arts seeks warm, friendly, and attentive volunteers to serve as Front of House Ambassadors for our annual dance recital. This combined role includes welcoming guests, assisting with seating, distributing programs, and ensuring a safe, accessible, and enjoyable experience for all attendees.


Volunteer Responsibilities:

Create a welcoming, festive atmosphere for all patrons

Greet guests warmly as they arrive and check tickets

Provide directions to restrooms, seating, and other venue areas

Distribute programs and recital information at entrances

Assist guests with accessibility needs

Monitor the lobby and auditorium during the performance for latecomers and prohibited activities

Help with crowd control during intermission

Address any audience emergencies or concerns promptly and communicate with house management as needed
