Volunteer: Point In Time Count Volunteer

Homeward Bound is a non profit organization with the mission to end homelessness in Buncombe County. At our AHOPE Day Center, we meet individuals basic needs, build relationships and community, and help clients on their journey to permanent housing. 

The annual Point In Time (PIT) count is an event required by the Department of Housing and Urban Development each year that aims to gather vital data related to the state of homelessness our community. Volunteers will help staff to engage clients accessing services and help them to complete services related to the data needed for the PIT Count. 


Volunteer Responsibilities:
Engage with clients; asking if they are willing to participate in surveys

Help clients to fill out surveys (unless they prefer to do so alone)

Ensure all surveys are turned into staff for tallying 

Requirements:

Volunteers will sign a waiver at the beginning of their shift
Personal transportation to sites

Skills Required:

Positive and compassionate communication skills
Ability to remain standing for long periods
Example: Ability to lift up to 10 lbs.

Attire:

Casual
Comfortable, close-toed shoes
No offensive images or language

Hand sanitizer/handwashing available on site

Volunteers must be comfortable interacting with clients who may be intoxicated - substance use is not permitted on site.

Homeward Bound is a non profit organization with the mission to end homelessness in Buncombe County, NC. Our AHOPE Day Center program focuses on individuals actively experiencing literal homelessness. We attempt to meet their basic needs, build relationships and community, and help them on their journey to permanent housing. 

Volunteers are essential in the daily functioning of AHOPE services. Volunteers help about between 8am and 1pm, Monday-Friday in the kitchen, mailroom, front desk, or hospitality desk (basement). Volunteers are welcome to come for shorter shifts like 8am to 11am o 11am to 1pm. Needs in these different stations vary day by day and volunteers will be assigned to the station(s) that have need on the day they arrive. 

Volunteer Responsibilities:

Making/serving coffee and serving prepared food; washing dishes/cleaning up kitchen

Checking mail for clients including packages and voicemails

Assisting case managers at the front desk by locking up bikes, charging and labeling phones, logging in kind donations and more. 

Handing out toiletries and other bathroom necessities, helping with laundry 


Requirements:

New volunteers must fill out an application at homewardboundwnc.org/volunteer

Volunteers must undergo brief onboarding and a background check if they would like to volunteer more than 2 times due to insurance requirements


Skills Required:

Excellent communication skills

Comfortability interacting with individuals who may be in crisis and/or intoxicated

Ability to remain standing for long periods

Ability to lift up to 25lbs.

Attire:

Casual attire
Comfortable, close-toed shoes

No offense images or language will be tolerated
