Who We Are
Hammer & Heart is dedicated to keeping low-income neighbors safe and healthy in their homes. Focusing on a unique need in the Swannanoa Valley community, we serve a population—often the elderly and disabled—that may face life-threatening consequences if their housing problems are not addressed.
On a practical level, we strive to:
-
Alleviate any housing conditions which pose an imminent threat to the life or safety of very low-income homeowners (often, the elderly or disabled).
-
Provide accessibility modifications and urgent repairs that may prevent the homeowner from staying in their home.
It’s a REAL challenge starting a nonprofit from scratch. Founded in 2021, Hammer & Heart is made-up of a small team of volunteers and part-time staff. With the support of our community and a team of dedicated individuals, we are making an impact in the Swannanoa Valley!
If you’d like to help us relieve suffering in our community, let us know. We love putting people to work!
What We Do
Hammer & Heart provides urgent home repairs to neighbors of the Swannanoa Valley who are financially unable to maintain their homes in a safe or livable condition.
H&H offers the opportunity to invest in our community in a variety of ways. We need carpenters, plumbers, electricians, painters, clean-up crews, photographers, social media specialists, fundraisers—anyone willing to pitch-in. At the heart of our labor is caring for our neighbors
Unlike Home Preservation (Habitat For Humanity’s home repair division which provides financial loans and volunteer labor to meet any home repair need), we serve individuals and families who have urgent repair needs and are unable to afford the cost of the repair. We meet the need by raising funds/securing grants, then offering free materials and professional labor to qualifying residents, at no cost to the homeowner.
This strategy allows us to address urgent repairs (repairs that may be hazardous to the welfare of the homeowner), respond nimbly to urgent needs (i.e. leaky roofs or plumbing issues) and remove the financial burden for the financially at-risk.
