Who We Are
Mission: To provide a calm presence in shelters or family assistance centers and assist young children in beginning to recover emotionally and physically after disasters.
Children’s Disaster Services, a part of Brethren Disaster Ministries Children’s Disaster Ministries, mostly works in shelters and family assistance centers. Many times we partner with the American Red Cross. Our volunteers are nationwide.
Children’s Disaster Services seeks to provide the beginning of the road to emotional recovery for young children. These small amounts of time children spend with our volunteers are hopefully remembered and cherished for a long time.
What We Do
Children’s Disaster Services is a nonprofit organization that trains and background-checks volunteers who care for children after disasters.
Volunteers with 25 hours of training and background checks arrive in teams and provide a calm presence and activities from our Kit of Comfort. We specifically choose activities and toys to help children engage in child-led play and begin to work through the process of recovery.
