Who We Are

Mission: To provide comfort and hope to communities by engaging volunteers in disaster recovery work, while staying rooted in the Jewish value of Tikkun Olam (repairing the world).

NECHAMA Jewish Response to Disaster is a non-profit that assists survivors of natural disasters. We aim to bring comfort to those in need. NECHAMA is the only Jewish organization to offer sustained direct services in the US following the onset of a hurricane, tornado, flood, or other natural disaster.

NECHAMA envisions a world where those affected by disaster are given the help they need regardless of income, creed, religion, or race. NECHAMA is committed to bringing assistance to those in need in a matter the upholds the survivors dignity.

What We Do

NECHAMA’s Programs aim to provide disaster-affected communities with the resources needed to not only rebuild after natural disasters, but also to enable these communities to better prepare for and respond to events in the future.

NECHAMA’s Response and Recovery work focuses on addressing immediate and long-term needs in post-disaster communities through environmentally conscious and community-focused approaches. By fostering partnerships with local organizations and federal agencies, NECHAMA provides infrastructure for sustained assistance. Some of the work that we do includes mucking and gutting homes, offering moving assistance, and doing debris removal. Centered on volunteer service and community engagement, the organization aims to repair community life and build resilience.

  • Response: Our Response work provides immediate services to disaster-affected areas to help families in the first stage of the disaster recovery process. Our multifaceted Response Programs are focused on rebuilding the community and laying the groundwork upon which future recovery efforts can be built and sustained.
  • Recovery: By engaging a holistic approach to disaster recovery, NECHAMA’s Recovery work promotes systemic change through long-term assistance and efforts towards community self-sustainability. Our Recovery Programs ensure not only a personalized approach to disaster recovery, but one that is also committed to rebuilding communities, continuous preparation, and stable growth.
