Who We Are

Operation Gateway is a non‑profit organization based in Asheville, North Carolina, dedicated to reducing recidivism by supporting formerly incarcerated individuals through a robust, holistic reentry model .

What We Do

We employ Community Health Workers—people with lived experience of incarceration and recovery—to act as trusted guides, helping individuals navigate complex challenges like obtaining identification, securing housing, accessing healthcare, and connecting to employment

Our approach includes:

  • Prison in‑reach to create tailored reentry plans before release

  • Welcome Home services, such as transportation to initial appointments, cell phones, clothing, and food support

  • Intensive care during the first 90 days, with continued follow‑up up to a year

Operation Gateway also runs our A.C.E.™ Initiative (Advocate, Collaborate, Educate) to address mental‑health stigma among justice‑impacted individuals and organize peer support groups and training for forensic peer support within the criminal-justice system.

Founded by Philip Cooper, a respected workforce development leader and recognized community advocate—honored with awards like the Attorney General’s Dogwood Award—OG builds relationships with employers, nonprofits, and government to drive systemic change

In short, Operation Gateway combines direct assistance, peer‑led support, and advocacy to empower returning citizens and transform reentry systems for lasting impact.
