Who We Are

Mission: To transform lives and communities through the power of literacy.

Literacy Together (formerly The Literacy Council of Buncombe County), created in 1986, is a nonprofit organization working with children, youth, and adults to increase comprehensive literacy and English language skills through access to literacy resources and specialized instruction by trained volunteer tutors. The organization envisions a community in which literacy is highly valued and achievable for all. Through efforts to promote literacy skills, Literacy Together works to improve individuals’ lives, the community, and the economy.

What We Do

Literacy Together relies on volunteer tutors to offer students personal instruction and high-quality materials through the following programs:

  • The Adult Literacy Program provides twice weekly tutoring to teach reading, writing, spelling, and math to English-speaking adults who read at or below a basic skills level.
  • The English for Speakers of Other Languages Program provides weekly tutoring sessions to teach oral English, reading, and writing to adults who have immigrated to the U.S. from around the world, and offers preparation for the U.S. Naturalization Exam for those eligible to become U.S. citizens.
  • The Youth Literacy Program provides free, in-school, one-on-one instruction in reading, writing, and spelling to children and teens from families with low incomes who struggle with literacy skills.
  • The Dolly Parton Imagination Library Program mails a new, free, age-appropriate book to registered children, birth to age five, in Buncombe County each month and provides workshops to parents on ways to promote children’s early literacy skills.

We are now offering all of our training on line and our tutors are meeting with their students online as well.
