Clyde A. Erwin Middle School is a middle school in the Buncombe County School System serving grades 7 – 8 with a goal of serving the whole child, families, and the community while providing each student with excellent teaching every day. As a community school supported by United Way of Asheville and Buncombe County, Erwin Middle School partners with community organizations to provide students and families with resources, opportunities and supports for success. Community schools create strong ties among families, students, schools, and the community, while serving as academic and social centers to support innovative learning.
What We Do
Erwin Middle School provides an academic curriculum for both seventh and eighth grades that includes language arts, math, social studies, science, and physical education, as well as art, band, and chorus. Other programs include counseling services, an English as a second language program, a career and technology program, athletics, and numerous student clubs. Additionally, as a community school, Erwin Middle School connects with community partners and volunteers to provide supportive programming to students, families, and the community, such as:
- Welcome Warriors: A program that engages both English-speaking and bilingual students as student ambassadors who are actively involved in welcoming newcomers.
- Community Nights featuring Homework Diners: A continuum of coordinated supports provided to students and their families each week, including, tutoring, opportunities to build parent-teacher relationships, free and nutritious catered meals, connections to community resources, and workforce readiness.
- Group Mentoring: Weekly mentoring sessions provided through various local mentoring groups and volunteers, including topics such as team building, healthy relationships, communication, and conflict resolution.
- Evening Classes for Adults: Weekly programming for adults at Erwin Middle including English as a Second Language (ESL) classes and GED preparation classes.
