Who We Are

Mission: To prevent harm, protect children and heal families through best practice programs and community collaboration.

Mountain Child Advocacy Center (MCAC) is a nonprofit agency working in Buncombe County to set the standard for the prevention, intervention, and treatment of child abuse and neglect. MCAC identifies and responds to child abuse and neglect in Buncombe County by educating, advocating, and empowering the public to protect children and reduce trauma through a coordinated community effort. MCAC works with the Family Justice Center, Buncombe County government, and numerous community agencies to provide the safest, most responsive community possible. 

What We Do

MCAC provides the following advocacy, education, and intervention services for children and families who have experienced abuse or neglect:

  • Advocacy: Assistance to children who have experienced abuse or neglect and their families through assessment of needs, help in meeting basic needs, and linkages to mental health, medical, legal, and other needed services. 
  • Education:  Implementation of a highly interactive research-based program for children in kindergarten through fourth grades, focusing on child abuse prevention, personal safety education, and outreach, which educates and empowers children with skills to protect themselves, develop support systems, and recognize, resist, and report abuse; training and educationfor adults with on sexual abuse and recognizing and responding to child abuse.  
  • Counseling: Crisis intervention and counseling for children, families, and their caretakers who have experienced abuse, with immediate access to evidenced-based therapies such as Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavior Therapy (TFCBT), Parent Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT), and Triple-P Parenting.
