Who We Are
Mission: To build community and leadership skills by pairing math education with friendship and support.
Marvelous Math Club is an afterschool club that integrates math and psychology, centering the experiences of the students, families, and guardians at Pisgah View Community Center and celebrates its elementary-age students (Math Leaders). MMC is a partnership between Asheville Housing Authority, UNC Asheville, and Asheville City Schools.
Marvelous Math Club was created at the request of the community to make a space where Math Leaders feel safe physically and emotionally while practicing and celebrating Math Leadership. The long term vision of Math Club is to create a community around Math learning that leaves Math Leaders with a strong math identity and leadership skills that they carry into their community and throughout life. As Math Champions (staff and adult community volunteers) we are committed to bringing a Racial Equity lens with Asset- and Justice-based Thinking, Language and Practice in the way we engage with Math Leaders in their math leadership practice.
What We Do
At Marvelous Math Club, Math Leaders have the support of Math Champions in activities including:
- Homework Completion
- Playing Math Games
- Engaging in fun Math Challenges
- Using Math to create Art and Craft designs
- Celebrating Math Leadership in themselves and their peers
