Who We Are

Mission: To engage students, faculty, staff, and the Asheville community in conversation and action around environmental issues.

The Student Environmental Center is a student-funded, student-led initiative at UNCA working as a campus resource for information related to environmental stewardship, university sustainability, and community outreach.

What We Do

The Student Environmental Center provides opportunities for students to gain education on environmental issues by creating, coordinating, and implementing projects and initiatives that promote sustainability on campus, such as:

  • Campus Gardens: Three gardens that provide opportunities for students, faculty, and community members to learn about and participate in sustainable agriculture practices.
  • Green Grants: Assistance to students proposing to host a sustainability project or event on campus.
  • Composting: A campus-wide effort to capture organic waste generated in dorms and other campus buildings.
  • Free Store: A store that provides a free exchange of usable items between members of the campus community.
  • Sustainability Resource Guide: Information for students hosting sustainable, “green” events on campus.
  • Greenfest: A weeklong festival promoting direct engagement with environmentalism and sustainability that is open to the campus community and the public.
