Who We Are
My Sistah Taught Me That (MSTMT) is a nonprofit organization that implements a developmental program designed to encourage, inspire, educate, and empower young girls, ages 11 – 19, in and around Buncombe County, with a special focus on girls growing up in single parent homes without their father. The primary goals of MSTMT are to enhance self-esteem and confidence, improve conflict management and problem-solving skills, and explore future career opportunities. MSTMT, along with its partner organization My Daddy Taught Me That (MDTMT), envisions empowering the youth of western North Carolina.
MSTMT is a partner in the Asheville Buncombe Middle Grades Network, which utilizes a collective impact strategy that brings together Asheville City Schools, Buncombe County Schools, and community partners around a shared vision of creating success-ready 9th-graders and improving graduation rates.
What We Do
MSTMT exposes young girls to professional leaders in the community who are dedicated to providing opportunities, open dialogue, and new experiences, with the intent of helping girls grow and mature. Participants have opportunities to increase social skills through character and leadership development, develop a positive body image, set educational and personal goals, and develop cultural awareness by participating in weekly meetings, special events, and monthly activities/outings such as:
- Annual Fashion Show that encourages positive self-esteem.
- Guest Speakers on a variety of topics.
- Personal Development Curricula that address relationship skills, pregnancy prevention, and workforce readiness.
- Annual Kickball Challenge including games, picnic, dance party, and more.
