Who We Are
Mission: To assist in developing young males into righteous, respectable, and responsible men through empowerment, education, and support.
My Daddy Taught Me That (MDTMT) is a nonprofit agency providing mentoring programs that support the development, uplift, and education of middle and high school males in the greater Asheville area. MDTMT’s vision is that every young male can become a positive, productive individual in the community while knowing from example what it means to be a man.
MDTMT is a partner in the Asheville Buncombe Middle Grades Network, which utilizes a collective impact strategy that brings together Asheville City Schools, Buncombe County Schools, and community partners around a shared vision of creating success-ready 9th-graders and improving graduation rates.
What We Do
My Daddy Taught Me That forms partnerships with numerous community organizations to foster a commitment to adolescent males that promotes prosocial friendships, strong interpersonal skills, good decision-making, acceptance of responsibility, and accountability for their actions. The program model includes the following experiences for young males:
- Discussion Group and Community Meals: Twice weekly meetings with meals and discussions on a variety of topics such as current events, leadership development, conflict resolution, decision-making skills, study habits, employment preparation, and others.
- Life Changing Events: Experiential field trips, events, and educational tours.
- Education: Provision of academic supports such as weekly tutoring and ongoing monitoring of academic progress through partnerships with school counselors and teachers.
- Career/Job Training: Access to employment supports such as job training programs (e.g., electrician, music production), information about resume development and interviewing skills, training on money management and work ethic development, and opportunities for community volunteering.
