Who We Are

The Joseph Initiative is a nonprofit organization working in Buncombe County to help people relearn to live together, prosper together, and be responsible for one another. The mission of The Joseph Initiative is to partner with members of the local community and nonprofit organizations to offer enrichment programs that strengthen families and unite the community. The organization envisions providing a resource center where every member of the community can access resources and participate in programs that enrich and strengthen neighborhoods.

What We Do

The Joseph Initiative partners with area nonprofit organizations to provide Buncombe county teenagers the opportunities to work with local business owners, other youth, and area professionals to pursue their interests in the areas of arts, business, culinary arts, life skills, and job training.  Teen programs promoting teamwork and leadership skills include:

  • What’s Your Story Filmmaking Class: A filmmaking class focused on the basics of the camera, sound, and lighting; strategies for conducting and filming interviews; principles of effective visual and audible storytelling; and the overall filmmaking process.
  • Y.E.S. Youth Culinary Program and Competition: A mentoring program where teens are paired with local chefs to learn the fundamentals of culinary techniques, culminating in the preparation of dishes that are presented in a culinary competition.
