Who We Are
Mission: To create a challenging learning environment that encourages high expectations for success through developmentally appropriate instruction that allows for individual differences and learning styles.
Johnston Elementary School is an elementary school located west of Asheville in the Erwin District of the Buncombe County Schools System serving children in kindergarten through fourth grade and in two Head Start classrooms. The school envisions preparing all students to realize their potential in a rapidly changing, diverse, global society. Johnston embraces and celebrates diversity among the students and promotes children’s success through school-family partnerships that grow students’ social, emotional, and academic skills.
What We Do
Johnston Elementary provides an academic curriculum that meets North Carolina standards for kindergarten through fourth grade, and includes additional experiences in art, music, STEM lab, and physical education. Every lesson includes speaking, listening, moving, reading, writing, and thinking. Other student services include:
- School social worker
- School counselor
- English as a Second Language program
- Speech therapy
- Positive Behavior Intervention and Supports (PBIS)
- Children’s First/Communities in School representative
