Early Learning Center Playground Mulching Project
Irene Wortham Center empowers children and adults with disabilities or financial need to lead healthy, happy, and more independent lives. Our five-star Early Learning Center provides education and care for children from six weeks old through pre-K.
We are seeking up to 20 volunteers to help spread fresh mulch across our Early Learning Center playground. This outdoor improvement project will be scheduled within the next few months, based on volunteer availability, weather, and mulch delivery.
Volunteer Responsibilities:
- Load and transport mulch using wheelbarrows
- Spread mulch throughout designated playground areas
- Rake mulch to create an even surface
- Help clean and organize the work area
- Follow instructions from Irene Wortham staff
Requirements:
- No previous landscaping experience is required
- Complete any required volunteer forms
- Follow all onsite instructions and safety guidelines
- Arrange personal transportation to and from the siteVolunteers under age 18 must be accompanied by an adult
Skills Required:
- Ability to work cooperatively as part of a team
- Ability to follow verbal instructions
- Ability to use shovels, rakes, and wheelbarrows safely
- Ability to bend, lift, push, and perform repetitive movements
- Ability to lift and carry up to 25 pounds
- Ability to work outdoors on uneven ground and in varying temperatures
Attire:
- Comfortable clothing suitable for outdoor work
- Closed-toe shoes or work boots are required
- Long pants are recommended
- Work gloves are strongly encouragedSunscreen, a hat, and a refillable water bottle are recommended

Health and Safety:
- Volunteers should use proper lifting techniques and ask for assistance with heavy loads
- Please stay hydrated and take breaks as needed
- Be prepared for sun, heat, dirt, and possible insects
- Hand sanitizer and basic first-aid supplies will be available onsite
- Please do not participate if you are experiencing symptoms of illness
