Bountiful Cities is a Food Access organization. We focus on Urban Agriculture and Education to support all people to have access to fresh food.

This is an ongoing opportunity to assist our FEAST Educators with cooking and garden classes led at our partner elementary schools, located in Asheville and Madison County. A specific schedule and location will be determined during a follow-up conversation with the Director of FEAST Programs. Classes are held during the school day (8-2:30 pm) and after school (3-5 pm) throughout the school year, M-F. Minimum commitment is 1.5 hours every other week though longer/more frequent opportunities are also available.


Volunteer Responsibilities:

  • Assist FEAST Educator with setting up and cleaning up lessons, including but not limited to preparing ingredients, preparing garden bed for planting projects, watering plants, putting away food, and washing dishes

  • Assist with or lead a garden or cooking related activity during FEAST Class 

  • Support students ages 4-12 with cooking and gardening related activities


Requirements:

  • Sign a volunteer waiver

  • Pass a background check


Skills required: 

  • Experience leading activities with groups of children

  • Experience and knowledge of basic cooking or gardening concepts

  • Comfortable working with young children in a school and garden setting

  • Ability to stoop, bend, twist, and carry materials up to 30 lbs

  • Ability to use discretion and confidentiality with sensitive information


Attire:

  • Clothing appropriate for being in a school (not ripped/ torn or revealing, PG language)

  • Clothing appropriate for the weather conditions

    • Potential school sites:

      • Hall Fletcher Elementary, Lucy S Herring Elementary, Claxton Elementary (Asheville City Schools)

      • Francine Delany New School (Charter school in Asheville)

      • Hot Springs Elementary (Madison County


Health and Safety:

  • FEAST Programming occurs in a school setting, either in a classroom or outdoors in a school garden

  • You may be using garden tools or kitchen equipment which post hazards if used in an unsafe manner

  • Volunteers working in schools must comply with health protocols of the schools

  • You may choose to wear a mask if you prefer and must provide your own
