About Musicians on Call, Asheville
Musicians On Call (MOC) is an award-winning national nonprofit that brings live and recorded music to veterans and other adults facing any health challenge, including Veterans recovering in VA facilities, family members supporting loved ones in need, and healthcare workers caring for patients.
During each shift, a Volunteer Guide escorts a Volunteer Musician room to room offering a live, acoustic performance to patients.
MOC needs YOU to help us spread the healing power of music at HCA Mission Hospital, and the Asheville VA Medical Center!

- Asheville VA Medical Center Wednesdays @ 5:30pm ET
- *Volunteers must complete one 90 minute shift once a month for at least one year
Being a Volunteer Guide for Musicians on Call
Musicians On Call’s Volunteer Guides escort Volunteer Musicians room-to-room to bring music to the bedsides of patients in healthcare facilities. The Volunteer Guide is the “eyes and ears,” or supervisor, during each shift as well as the liaison between the hospital and the Volunteer Musician, following the protocols, policies and expectations of the healthcare facility.
Responsibilities:
- Fulfill all requirements of the MOC Volunteer Guide role, ensuring Volunteer Musician follows policies as well
- Arrive in proper dress code
- Remain with the Volunteer Musician at all times
- Enter patient’s rooms first, asking the patient if they would like to hear a song
- Serve as a liaison with the hospital staff, following instructions on patient visitation for the shift
- Supervise the Volunteer Musician, ensuring the Volunteer Musician follows policies as well as making appropriate song choices, taking note of the patient’s response.
- Keep track of how many patients, caregivers, and staff are played for
- Abide by HIPPA at all times
- Be familiar with and follow healthcare facility protocols, policies and expectations
- Represent Musicians On Call’s values: Community, Compassion, Inclusivity, Excellence, and Innovation
- While music can be therapeutic, your role with Musicians On Call is to provide entertainment and is volunteer-based. Musicians On Call’s programs are not a form of Music Therapy. Our Volunteers provide entertainment to patients and their families during their hospital stay.
Requirements:
- Be at least 18 years old
- Commit to volunteering once per month for a minimum of one year
- Complete MOC’s Volunteer Certification and renewal requirements, which includes a Background Check, online training, and at least two shadow-shifts with an experienced Volunteer Guide
- Complete hospital onboarding, which may require additional and annual healthcare facility clearances, as required by the hospital (such as proof of immunizations, additional health clearances such as TB Test, and hospital-specific training in order to volunteer)
- Be comfortable interacting in an intimate environment where they will see patients who are not feeling well, distressed family members, IV poles, bandages, etc.
- Uphold and adhere to all MOC policies and guidelines, including HIPPA
Skills Required:
- Ability to represent MOC values and follow MOC policies and guidelines, including HIPPA
- Ability to learn the protocols, policies and expectations of the healthcare facility, making sure these guidelines are upheld during the shift both by themselves and their assigned Musician(s)
- Ability to engage appropriately with patients, caregivers and staff while maintaining emotional composure
- Ability to provide instructions to the Volunteer Musician
Attire:
- An MOC Branded Volunteer TShirt
- Long pants/skirt with no visible holes/tears
- Closed-toed shoes
- Follow the attire requirements of the specific healthcare facility (i.e. ID Badge, masks if required, etc. )

- Additional PPE such as masks could be required by participating healthcare facilities: follow instructions of the healthcare facility
