Each new school year, many families struggle to provide their children with necessary school supplies. From the start, these children are at a disadvantage, both socially and economically. Hands On Asheville-Buncombe has always believed that a student’s focus should be on attending school and learning—not on whether or not they have the necessary tools for success.
Since 2007, with the help and support of local businesses and community members, our School Supply Drive has allowed more than 12,100 students to walk into their first day of school fully prepared. Because of our ability to buy supplies in bulk, that translates to over $725,000 in school supplies donated! This is only possible through your generous donations. Last year, 2,401 students were able to go to school without having to worry that they had everything they needed.
Fill the Bus Event Details
Walmart has partnered with United Way Asheville and Buncombe County to host several Fill the Bus events to raise awareness to the public and collect necessary school supplies. You are in for an exciting evening when you sign up to volunteer at our Fill the Bus event at Walmart Bleachery Blvd. on Thursday, August 1st from 4pm-7pm!
Volunteers will promote our Backpack to the Future 2019 School Supply Drive by passing out flyers and collecting and loading supplies onto the school bus. This is a family friendly event and ALL ages are welcome! Volunteers can expect to stand for long periods. Volunteers should wear comfortable clothing and shoes, a hat/sunglasses/suncreen, and bring a water bottle. United Way will provide a Live United t-shirt to all volunteers for this event. Light snacks and water/gatorade will be available.
