Christine W. Avery Learning Center (CWA) is an educational nonprofit organization working to build an active, culturally enriching learning community among students of all ages. The mission of CWA is to provide students of all backgrounds with access to a quality education rooted in sociocultural theory and ministry; assist in the growth and development of students academically, socially, and spiritually; and produce the next generation of leaders.

CWA is seeking in-person volunteers to assist students K-5 who have been identified as needing individual academic support with understanding and staying focused on their virtual school work. Volunteer roles include assisting 1-2 students at a time with logging into devices and programs, staying on task while engaging in lessons, assisting with understanding and completing assignments and communicating with site supervisors on students academic needs. 

Time Commitment:

  • Volunteers are asked to commit to a minimum of 1 shift per week 
  • Each shift is 2 hours, and volunteers can fulfill more than one shift per day
  • Shifts run Monday - Friday between 8:30 am and 2:00 pm depending on the students classroom time
  • Please arrive 15 minutes prior to shift start for health screening and transition time

Requirements/Training:

  • Respond above to the opportunity

  • Interview with program director 
  • Complete a background check 
  • Application
  • TB Test 
  • Observation time and training prior to working with students directly

Skillset/Preferred Requirements: 

  • Works well with elementary age youth
  • Enjoys working in a learning environment
  • Has knowledge of or willingness to learn technology used by students 
  • Remains patient and calm with students experiencing technical or learning challenges
  • Demonstrates a positive attitude and empathy for students and Lighten Up team
  • Non-judgmental, fair, firm and friendly
  • Models excellent verbal and non-verbal communication 
  • We welcome volunteers to share their hobbies and special interests 

Health/Safety:

  • Health and safety screening prior to every shift start:
    • List of health and safety questions asked
    • Temperatures taken 
  • We are asking volunteers to wear/bring their own face covering (masks available upon request)
    • Cloth covering nose and mouth
    • Fabric or disposable face mask
  • Asking volunteers to maintain physical distance of 6 feet or more when possible
    • Note: there are times when the volunteer task requires volunteers to engage with students closer than 6 feet. Please do not sign up if you feel uncomfortable.
  • Volunteers will be asked to adhere to proper hand hygiene
