Rebuild Jones Park
Jones Park Playground was a treasured community park used by families from across the city of Asheville. Unfortunately, it was removed without a replacement plan in September of 2021. Members of the community began working immediately to find a solution to get this playground rebuilt with donated funds and labor from the community. In this process the park was renamed Candace Pickens Memorial Park to honor her memory. On October 4-8 hundreds of volunteers from neighborhoods across the city and county will be giving their time to help bring this playground back. This project is truly a community build in more ways than one.
We need skilled and unskilled workers to get this built - skilled is defined as knowing how to use a circular saw. We need help with childcare for volunteers working, serving food, art and special features. We need team captains, both skilled and unskilled, to be on site every day managing the crews of volunteers with guidance from Playgrounds by Leathers supervisors.
Don't let yourself be deterred because you're not a builder or handyman. There are lots of ways to help - let us know what you are interested in doing when you sign up!
Volunteer responsibilities include:
- Food service
- Childcare for volunteers

Location: Former Jones Park Playground near Ira B. Jones Elementary School.
Shift Information: There are three shifts each day between October 4th and October 7th. The shifts are 8 am-12 pm, 12:30-5 pm, and 5:30-8:30 pm. On October 8th the shifts are 8 am-12 pm and 12:30-5 pm.
Information about any other requirements, attire, and health/safety will be provided by the organizers.
Please note that United Way of Asheville and Buncombe County is supporting this project by recruiting volunteers for it but is not involved in organizing or running the event.
