Virtual: Teach English as a Second Language to Immigrants in Buncombe County

Description

As a one-on-one tutor, you will teach English to an adult who has immigrated to the U.S. and is seeking to improve their English in order to get a better job, help their children in school, or pass the U.S. citizenship test. On-line Tutors can work from anywhere in the world! You do not need to speak another language or have teaching experience.

Volunteer Responsibilities:

  • Take 8 hours of training (self-paced or live online)
  • Prepare a weekly lesson plan based on provided curriculum
  • Tutor for 2 hours weekly with one student or a small group of students
  • Report your volunteer hours and student progress once a month

Requirements:

  • On-line volunteer orientation
  • Completion of training
  • Commitment of six months

Skills Required: 

  • Curiosity and compassion working with someone from another culture
  • Willingness to learn alongside your student
  • You do not need to speak a language other than English; we’ll train you!
