Literacy Together (formerly The Literacy Council of Buncombe County) Volunteer Tutors provide free, customized, one-on-one or small group tutoring to improve English language skills for adult immigrants in Buncombe County.
Volunteer Responsibilities:
- Take 8 hours of training (self-paced or live online)
- Prepare a weekly lesson plan based on provided curriculum
- Tutor for 2 hours weekly with one student or a small group of students
- Report your volunteer hours and student progress once a month
Requirements:
- On-line volunteer orientation
- Completion of training
- Commitment of six months
Skills Required:
- Curiosity and compassion working with someone from another culture
- Willingness to learn alongside your student
- You do not need to speak a language other than English; we’ll train you!
Location: Tutors meet with their students at a mutually agreed place and time in the Literacy Together office (31 College Place, Asheville) or elsewhere in the community–public libraries, coffee shops, etc.
