Reality Store is a great financial literacy event held at the school each year that connects education levels, income and real world expenses to the experience.
The Reality Store gives students the chance to "purchase" basic household needs like water, electricity, car insurance, and day care from 'stores' set-up in the gym. To begin, each student receives a different monthly budget and a number of kids (1-4). Students have to make purchase decisions (e.g. used vs. new car) to provide necessities for their family while not breaking their budget. Second jobs are available if necessary. We will run two 1-hour blocks, allowing each 6th grader to take part. I'm looking for volunteers to work ‘stores' by helping students make their purchase decisions, write their checks, and properly balance their household budgets. To conclude each session I'll run a large group activity emphasizing how math skills are used in real life, and the relationship between income and education level. Volunteers are needed for both blocks. The actual role of the volunteer is pretty simple, you'll get the hang of it in just a few minutes. This is a great opportunity to work directly with students!
