Before you even begin thinking about volunteering, ask yourself – Am I well enough to volunteer?

Your safety and limiting the spread of COVID-19 is everyone’s main priority. We encourage you to review and adhere to the recommendations on the Buncombe County readiness site on how best to avoid COVID-19 and what to do if you think you might have it.


The Salvation Army in Asheville is a nonprofit organization, an evangelical part of the universal Christian Church, working in Buncombe County to serve people in need of food, clothing, and shelter. The mission of The Salvation Army is to meet human needs with love and compassion.

We are looking for volunteers to assist in prepping food, cooking and cleanup for our shelter clients. 

Shifts are Sunday- Saturday and run approximately 3 hours between 9:00 and 4:00. Volunteers are welcome to choose one, consecutive, or multiple shifts. 

Volunteer Roles Include:

  • Food Prep
  • Cooking Food 
  • Cleanup

Requirements:

  • Respond to secure your volunteer slot
  • Pass all the health and safety screening questions
  • Ability to work comfortably in a commercial kitchen
  • Must be ages 18-60 to volunteer
  • Positive customer service skills
  • Ability to remain calm during times of crisis

Health and Safety:

  • Gloves and Face Coverings provided if needed
  • Temperature taken upon arrival
  • Physical distancing of 6 feet between volunteers
  • Hand washing sinks and hand sanitizer available 
  • We are asking volunteers to wear/bring their own face covering if they have their own
    • Bandanna covering nose and mouth
    • Cloth covering nose and mouth
    • Fabric or disposable face mask
  • Asking volunteers to maintain physical distance of 6 feet or more when possible
    • Note: there are times when the volunteer task requires volunteers to engage closer than 6 feet. Please do not sign up if you feel uncomfortable.

Why does this matter? We have to limit the number of people attending each project. This helps everyone stay safe by following COVID-19 specific safety measures. Please understand that if you show up on-site without registering first, you may be turned away so that the agency can maintain safety procedures.  Safety is our top priority and we want to be sure needs are met while also being safe.
