As a community school supported by United Way of Asheville and Buncombe County, Erwin Middle School partners with community organizations to provide students and families with resources, opportunities and supports for success. Community schools create strong ties among families, students, schools, and the community, while serving as academic and social centers to support innovative learning. For Community Engagement Markets we partner with Buncombe County and Manna Foodbank to ensure our neighbors have access to wholesome food.
For each market that occurs on the second Monday of every month, there are 6 slots available for a 2.25-hour shift. We'll be following guidelines to help ensure the health and safety of all volunteers and participants.
Food Sorting/Packaging: 3:45-5:00
Food Distribution: 5:00-6:00
Volunteer Responsibilities:
- Assistance with on-site setup and breakdown
- Unloading food truck and/or packaging boxes/bags
- Passing out food boxes/bags to community residents
Requirements:
- Respond to the shift by clicking the blue RESPOND button above

- Sign a waiver before the start of the shift
Skills Required:
- Positive customer service skills
- Ability to remain calm during times of crisis
- Ability to lift up to 10 lbs.
- Bending, twisting, stooping
- Comfortable working outside in all weather conditions
Attire:
- Wear clothes that are comfortable and let you move freely
- Dress for the weather forecast, this event is held outdoors
- Comfortable, close-toed shoes

- Masks are optional, bring your own if you need one
- Hand sanitizer is available on site
- Gloves provided during food packaging
- We ask volunteers to maintain a physical distance of 6 feet or more when possible
- Note: there are times when the volunteer task requires volunteers to engage closer than 6 feet. Please do not sign up if you feel uncomfortable.
