Literacy Together (formerly the Literacy Council of Buncombe County) is a nonprofit organization working with children, youth, and adults to increase comprehensive literacy and English language skills through access to literacy resources and specialized instruction by trained volunteer tutors. Literacy Together relies on volunteer tutors to offer students personal instruction and high-quality materials through various programs.
Our Adult Literacy Program needs GED volunteer tutors asap!
The highest-demand GED subjects at the moment are Math and Language Arts. Most of the tutor training would be in an online, self-paced platform. The time commitment is six months. Please get in touch with Rebecca Massey: 828-254-3442, Ext. #202
Although English is their native language, Adult Literacy students are non-readers who struggle with recognizing individual written words and comprehending a sentence or longer passage. They comprise a diverse group in terms of educational background, socio-economic status, personal goals, and learning styles. Many are challenged by learning disabilities such as dyslexia. They come to us because they want to improve their job prospects, help their children in school, enroll in a GED program, or just feel better about themselves and their ability to cope in today’s world.

Time Commitment:
- 2 hours/week for six months minimum
Requirements:
- GED or High School diploma
- Participate in online training
- Excellent customer service skills
- Ability to work patiently with various levels of literacy skills
- Access to reliable internet
- Ability to navigate virtual meetings with minimal distractions
Training:
Volunteers must undergo one of the training tracks
- Basic Training which takes approximately 10 hours
- GED Program Training which takes approximately 5 to 6 hours

Why does this matter? We have to limit the number of people attending each project. This helps everyone stay safe by following COVID-19 specific safety measures. Please understand that if you show up on-site without registering first, you may be turned away so that the agency can maintain safety procedures.
